사람들은 앞다투어 자신의 기억을 지우기 시작했고,
곧 개인이 개인의 기억을 선별적으로 소실할 수 있는 시대가 열렸다.
이에 야기될 사회적 혼란을 우려한 정부는 이를 규제하자는 안건을
정부 시범 사업인 '아바타 토론회'의 첫 토론 안건으로 상정했다.
아바타 토론회 <우리는/자신의-기억을-지우는-것을/허용해도-되는가?> 에서는
토론자 4명과 각각 토론자에게 배정된 인간 아바타 4명이 참가한다.
토론자는 직접적으로 발언할 수 없으며, 원격으로 연결된 아바타를 통해서만 토론에 참여할 수 있다.
당신은 그 토론회에 토론자로서 초대되었다.
당신은 규제에 찬성하는가 반대하는가?
사람들이 스스로 원하는 기억을 지우게 되면 어떤 부작용이 나타날까?
어떤 규제를 해야 하는가?
정부는 애초에 규제를 할 권리가 있는가?
At a certain seaside, people wearing masks resembling the face of a Waejangnyeo began to lose their memories. Soon, individuals started voluntarily erasing their own memories, and an era emerged in which personal memories could be selectively discarded. Anticipating the social disruption this might cause, the government proposed to regulate the practice as the first agenda item of a pilot initiative: the Avatar Debate Assembly.
Titled Are We / to Allow / the Erasure of / Our Own Memories?, the debate invites four participants, each paired with a human avatar. The participants cannot speak directly; instead, they must engage in the debate exclusively through their assigned avatars.
You have been invited to the debate as one of the participants. Do you support the regulation or oppose it? What unintended consequences might arise from allowing individuals to selectively erase their memories? What forms of regulation, if any, should be implemented? Does the state even have the authority to intervene in such matters?

아바타토론회는 평등한 토론환경을 조성하기 위한 정부의 시범 사업으로 개인을 신체에서 분리하는 것을 통해 본래 주어졌던 위계를 비틀어보려는 실험이다. 인간은 태어난 순간부터 특정 신체를 가지게 되고 이를 통해 타인과 접하며, 강요된 위계를 기억하며 사회화 된다.
이렇게 기억된 위계는 온라인과 같이 신체가 없는 공간에서도 유지되며 사람들은 자신이 기억하는 위계를 어디서든, 자유롭게 재생산하게 된다. 기억소거관리부에서는 ‘기억’을 관리하고 연구하며, “기억의 소거는 사회가 부여한 특정 신체에 대한 특정한 위계에 혼란을 가져올 수 있는 것인가?” 에 대한 해답을 찾기 위해 아바타 토론회를 개최하게 되었다.
아바타 토론회의 목적은 남의 입을 통해 내 의견을 말하게 하는 것을 통해, 즉 특정 신체의 '기억'이 다른 신체를 통해 발화되었을 때의 현상을 실험하는 것에 있다.

The Avatar Debate Assembly is a government pilot project aiming to create a more equitable discursive space by disentangling individuals from their own physical bodies. It explores how socially imposed hierarchies—learned and reinforced through the body—are remembered and reproduced, even in disembodied, online environments. From the moment of birth, individuals are assigned a body that mediates their social interactions and encodes hierarchical memories.
The Memory Erasure Department, responsible for research and governance of memory practices, poses the central question: “Can the erasure of memory destabilize hierarchies imposed on specific bodies by society?” The Avatar Debate Assembly serves as a performative inquiry into this question.
Its ultimate purpose is to experiment with what happens when the 'memory' of a specific body is articulated through another—when one's voice is heard through someone else's mouth.
