The bodies of women and queer individuals are those that most frequently diverge from the norm, while simultaneously remaining sites most persistently demanded to prove themselves. In order to exist, survive, and be loved as a stage where the community most vividly displays its own structures and desires, these bodies continuously explain themselves. What I seek to document through the mediums of performance, sound, lenses, and Korean traditional music is not the success or failure of this proof, but the body itself, endlessly repeating that very act of proof.
Lace and glitter, water and loud laughter are placed alongside straw blades, funerals, vomiting, and death. Rather than displaying blood directly, erosion of the body is made visible through the surveillance lens of CCTV and a sleek, controlled screen surface, constructing a form of 'bloodless gore.' In this space, water becomes a medium that submerges, floats, and shifts the body into new postures. Rather than the tragedy of drowning, I exhibit the singular posture that drowning has etched into the body. Much like lace, where negative space forms a pattern, I have spent a long time reading into how bodies forced to fill deficits outside the norm endure through time.
This critical inquiry led to autumn nori (2022), which addresses violence within intimate relationships, the family structures that conceal it, and the survivor's ongoing life where the perpetrator has been erased; the new tale (2022), which re-imagines traditional folktales through impure, wicked minorities; girl a’s diary (2024), which explores self-proof and social death within a community; and wreaking waves (2025), which questions the habit of reverting to normalcy through ghost marriages.
More recently, I presented the orange veil (2026), a performance trilogy tracking the differing postures of the body executed before oneself and others. Spanning from purified water, egg solution, milk cream, which visualizes internalized surveillance and the social body amidst tension with the audience; the orange veil, a single-person monologue involving six hours of repetitive straw-blade walking that displays a body exhausted by relentless self-proof; and splitting legs, which self-performs private pain and obsessive limits; to the video work vomit (2026), which dryly observes the tragedy of a body with internalized norms by documenting acts of binge eating, vomiting, and self-surveillance over a year via private CCTV—I trace the multi-layered ways in which the body endures time and norms.
Furthermore, I pay close attention to the residues left behind after the event of a performance. Because performance is a high-context medium that cannot be fully captured by video or photography alone, I strive for its translation and re-performance into diverse languages—including novels, sound, criticism, and academic papers. Here, documentation is not merely an act of preserving the past, but an active performance that allows the piece to remain alive and moving within the body of another. In this way, I continuously record the state of these fossils, still moving heavily today.
