"The Covered Body"
—Refers not to a body merely trapped, but to a body covered and concealed beneath an "orange futon" (orange yo), simultaneously constricted and bound by gravity. This orange futon acts as the covering object, while beneath it lie the covered objects—the [water/objects]. Absurdly, these [water/objects] enveloped by the orange futon transform into unnatural, monstrous entities, becoming yo-mul (a play on "monstrous being" and "futon-water").
Queer and feminized bodies—these fluid [waters/objects]—fall into a relentless cycle of self-proof. This stems from the double-edged nature of definition and proof: when a word emerges to define a specific group, they gain a "name," yet this instantly demands a process of "proving" that they conform to it. For queer individuals whose very essence lies in fluid non-conformity, nothing is more difficult or irrational than this demand for proof. Yet, the reason we resist is to break free from the exclusionary ideologies spawned by these fixed categories.
However, such demands for proof do not come solely from outsiders; they often arise even more intensely from within the queer community itself. For identities that straddle the line of normativity—such as bisexuality or non-binary transness—the demands from within the community feel more threatening and immediate. It brings the lonely realization that what was imagined as a community of resistance actually demands conformity to the very same fixed categories.
Here, leesima focuses on the pressure inflicted upon queer bodies, the relentless pull toward normativity, and the desire of the perpetual outsider. Through a series of body-based performances, leesima explores the dynamics when these bodies 1) temporarily meet others, 2) continuously interact with others, and 3) engage with themselves. Furthermore, contemplating how to document the performance medium beyond traditional photography and video, leesima experiments with non-retentive secondary creations—such as sound and text—as alternative forms of documentation.

For a brief second, glancing at the nutrition facts label, I fell into the illusion that three simple words constituted my entire body. If what I consume comes to form my flesh, these three components will linger deep within my skin and internal organs for a long time, turning into fat or muscle. If the swallowed things cling like sticky, unshakeable visceral fat, nauseatingly persistent, the illusion will solidify into a tangible body.
The improvised performance purified water, egg solution, milk cream begins with three performers—leesima, Go Dayeon, and Bae Minsu—continuously encroaching upon and satirizing one another's bodies. Overall, this giggling, lighthearted improvised play is, as the name suggests, purely spontaneous; even the performers themselves cannot predict how each session will unfold.
As an actor and as a human, one possesses a single body that cannot be divided. When that body is invaded by another person, by time, or by physical exhaustion, its boundaries break down and turn to mush. We stand on stage while simultaneously exposing our raw selves, eagerly awaiting the fragments of the body that get loaded by unpredictable stimuli—accompanied by explosive laughter and piercing screams.

leesima performs a Jakdu Gut, placing razor-sharp blades atop a twelve-step staircase, repeating eerie ritualistic movements—wrapping silk around their body, ascending near the ceiling, and dropping close to the earth. Standing on the blades, shima—both shaman and queer—sees wider and further than anyone. Perhaps even superior. Yet simultaneously, that body and reality must exist among them—the "fools." A soul that has transcended paired with a foolish body, this individual willingly consents to proof, responding to their voices from atop the blades. However, as this Jakdu performance is sustained by shima alone twelve consecutive times for thirty minutes each without rest—totaling six continuous hours—the body physically begins to break down. Through this, the audience is forced to directly confront a body exhausted by the ceaseless demands for proof. In the end, leesima does not fail, shining with tears, love, and solidarity; yet the next morning, when eyes open, what remains is credit card debt, torn-off fingernails, crushed flesh, and an agonizing pain that renders the body completely immobile.

When I encounter my own body, what frightens me most is looking directly at it. Can I truly face my body? And can I move this body as if others were not there, as if the pain left behind by others did not exist?
Continuing from the series on sibling sexual violence survivors— dir (2022) and mulgup (2026)—I explored why I "cannot split my legs." In disciplines predominantly populated by women (and feminized bodies), such as Pilates, circus, ballet, and pole dancing, one of the inevitable movements is splitting the legs. What makes this simple movement so difficult, and why is it that, even though I am physically capable of splitting my legs, I still cannot do so?
